A Brief (!!) history by Dick Goldsmith
I
bought my bike as a frame round about 1998 and built it up with
Rockshox XLC triple clamp forks,Mavic x519 on LX hubs, and a mixture
of LX/STX groupset.I slowly began replacing the bits with XT parts
.A replace and upgrade sort of thing ,as they broke I got a better
part to replace it with.
At
bike 2000 at the NEC I got a real bargain on a Cane Creek AD10 rear
shock which replaced my leaking shock. Also got some cool ATM bars.Magura
H33 hydraulic rim brakes followed These are some of the best brakes
I have had, working perfectly with no maintain
in all the time I used them,The only problem as with all rim brakes
was they wear out rims, and these being so powerful went through
2 rims.The original X519 and CD D521.
The forks finally gave out about a year ago The forkleg bushes and
damping cartridge.
As I was trying to get the weight down on the bike I bought a pair
of Marizochi Z4 air shocks and got the weight down to less than
29lb. I also got a coilover rear shock (Fox Vanilla R).
The light bike was OK but as the style of riding I was doing changed
I started adding. first the Fox rear shock went on .A vast improvement
,then some 2.1 Tioga mud tyres and flat pedals. Then in late 2001
as part of a deal with a friend I got some Hope C2 brakes and nice
red Big-un hubs with Phat Albert rims.
I love the brakes and hubs but at first was a bit put off by the
Phat Albert rims At 49mm wide these are seriously big .But after
riding them for a while I am starting to like them (if only to flatten
out the trails).
So there it is my bike .What's next ?well those forks will have
to go soon?
